Carling cup champions were brought back down to earth with a defeat to a resurgent Arsenal this weekend and it got me thinking about Liverpool, and the credentials of Kenny Dalglish.
The return of King Kenny was the event of the century, "the second coming" to most Liverpool fans however, I believe that fans are looking at their current situation through "Dalglish tinted spectacles".
Just outside the top six and wholly under-performing against smaller reputation teams, Liverpool fans live for those big wins against the likes of Manchester United and Manchester City. The Carling cup win over Cardiff was a hollow one as they did not deserve to win.
Unfortunately, the Carling cup win may mask, fans and owners, perspective on the success of their season. In fact, poor signings and a lack of consistency may mean a downward spiral for Liverpool.
What Liverpool may have to look forward to is Kenny walking when the pressure gets too much as it did at Newcastle and Blackburn, he walks. What Liverpool needs is a 21st Century manager that can cope with the archaic former players opinions. I believe Didier Deschamps would be a manager that would fit that bill. He has managed at the highest level, dealt with crisis situations and has taken a team into the Champions League finals. He is a world class manager that has lived in the shadows of top managers and I believe that he could make the grade.
